Tomando como punto de partida las características del hipergénero que podríamos denominar debate social, así como la legitimación y la deslegitimación como funciones ideológicas fundamentales para el estudio de las relaciones entre sociedad y comunicación, este artículo pretende ofrecer algunas propuestas para el análisis crítico de los discursos referidos preferentemente a las enfermedades poco frecuentes en España. Basándonos en datos obtenidos tanto de folletos y revistas de asociaciones de pacientes, como de algunos textos legislativos y periodísticos, intentaremos explorar no sólo la manipulación discursiva de tres características de los grupos de pacientes (representatividad, responsabilidad y objetividad), sino también la de algunas características básicas de las enfermedades mismas (identidad, intensidad, magnitud, prevalencia y dimensión). Este artículo forma parte de un proyecto de investigación más ambicioso sobre aspectos comunicativos relacionados con las enfermedades raras.

Taking as a starting point the characteristics of the hypergenre which we refer to by the name social debate, together with legitimation and delegitimation as fundamental ideological functions that help us to study the relationship between society and communication, this article, aims to put forward proposals for the critical study of discourses pertaining preferably to infrequent diseases in Spain. Based on the data obtained from patients’ leaflets and journals, plus legislative and journalistic texts, we aim to explore, not only the discursive manipulation of three features of patient groups (representativeness, responsibility and objectivity), but also the manipulation of some basic characteristics of the illnesses (identity, intensity, magnitude, prevalence and dimension). This article forms part of a broad research project concerning the communicative aspects of the afore-mentioned pathologies.
